PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION	People who know something about Offworlder lore might describe Magda as “witchy.” Indeed, with her thin boney frame, pointy chin, and slightly hooked nose she does resemble Halloween images of old. Except that her skin is pale and fine, not warty, and her eyes are intelligent and kind, not menacing. Her long hair is thick and somewhat coarse.

PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION	Magda has a natural affinity for organization, both of objects and of people. Her very matter-of-fact mind is able to break trying situations (messes, hold events, disasters) into parts and then formulate a comprehensive plan of attack. Magda is not easily alarmed, and tends to take even the unexpected parts of life in stride. Which is not to say she doesn’t feel fear, sorrow, or anger over some things, Magda just doesn’t let it get in the way of her work. Magda sees the role of meta-mother to be part of her job at the Hold. As such she will always make herself available to the Hold’s children (which in Magda’s eyes in anyone under 25) for counseling and encouragement. However, she is careful not to offer children the easy way out or to do their work for them, as she sees this as coddling that will ultimately weaken them. Magda oversees the harper lessons and other aspects of child rearing in the Hold, even ones that aren’t technically her duty. She loves children and this, along with her protectiveness of children, has become more pronounced since her sons’ deaths. When it comes to her private affairs Magda is unfailingly discrete. She is good at hiding her emotions and prefers to keep them and her personal entanglements secret. Most people don’t know that beneath Magda’s calm matronly facade she leads an intense inner life. For most of her life Magda has kept a journal, which she keeps under lock and key. In it are a mix of sketches, poems, thoughts, and records of day to day events. The only person she ever let see it was her late husband.

SHORT HISTORY	Magda was born the fifth of eight children in a minor holder family outside of Igen hold. Like all of her sisters she was raised to be a Lady, even though the likelihood of any of them ever becoming one was slim. Magda’s childhood was normal enough, and her family was loving. When she was fourteen her father began looking for a suitable husband for her, and ended up deciding on the youngest son of a childhood friend. The chosen boy, Finlee, had no holdings but at 17 was a promising journeyman beastcrafter. Finlee had already been assigned a good position at Keroon Hold. A month after her fifteenth birthday Finlee and his parents came to her home hold for the marriage. Finlee and Magda were only given a few days to get to know each other before the wedding, but those few days eased Magda’s anxiety considerably. Finlee had been raised to treat women with chivalry and kindness, and the two shared similar interests and temperament. After the wedding the couple moved back to Keroon. They lived together for two years in a tiny sheperd’s cot adjoining the pastures in which Finlee worked. The one room shack was cozy, warm, and shared with a large collie. The pair would have been happy living there forever, but in her seventeenth year Magda became pregnant for the first time. She requested bigger quarters to accommodate the coming baby, and they were moved to a larger cot near the stables. Magda gave birth to her first son, Cathen, a bit after her eighteenth birthday. Having her first child was something of a revaluation for Magda. She loved the feeling of being pregnant, of nursing, and even came to consider her rough labor as something cathartic. She also loved her son, fiercely. As soon as Cathen was weaned she insisted on trying for a second child, which Finlee was happy to do. A second pregnancy, however, proved difficult. After a turn of unsuccessful attempts she went to a healer, fearing something was wrong. The healer was able to reassure her that her last labor, rough though it was, shouldn’t have permanently damaged her womb. But he wasn’t sure what was the matter. He suggested that perhaps Magda’s skinniness was the issue. Finlee took this to heart, and began plying his wife with fattening foods. After about a half-turn of being pampered and stuffed by her husband, Magda became pregnant again. She gave birth to her second son Magaim in her twenty first year. Magda and Finlee wanted more children, but in the years following Magaim’s birth they found their hands too full with the children and duties they had to worry about getting more. They had troubles, too. After the honeymoon period of their early marriage Magda had cut the couple’s “marital relations” down to just those nights when she believed she was ovulating. Finlee became frustrated. When Magda was twenty five she found out that her husband had started an affair with another women. She was crushed, and confronted Finlee about it. The two fought at first, but eventually were able to talk openly. Finlee apologized and proclaimed his continued love for his wife. In turn Magda agreed that their sex life was insufficient. They agreed to consummate their marital bond regularly every Restday. Perhaps because of this new arrangement, or maybe because of luck, Magda conceived her third child at the end of her twenty fifth year. The baby girl, Lidia, was coddled by both parents as she was their only daughter and youngest child. Shortly after the birth of their daughter the couple was asked to come work at the newly founded Dawnsisters Hold. As soon as Lidia was old enough to travel they left for the South. Once there both Finlee and Magda threw themselves into their work. Finlee began working to breed fatter, hardier caprines and woolies, as well as helping in the starting of a small porcine farm at one of the satellite cotholds. Magda was asked to help out in the lower caverns, and made a point of helping with the childcare around the Hold. About a year after she started working at the Hold the original Headwoman stepped down. She was offered the position, and accepted. Around the same time Magda found out that her husband was again having an affair with another woman. This time, however, she did not confront her husband about it. Magda was also having an affair with another woman, and decided not to be hypocritical. Both husband and wife were careful to keep their extramarital dalliances secret, to avoid publicly embarrassing their spouse. The Disasters came, and tore apart Magda’s life. Her husband and sons had been at Finlee’s beloved porcine farm when some of the asteroids hit. The stone walls of the cothold collapsed, crushing everybody inside. Magda had no time for grief, there was too much work to do at the time. She had to help organize relief efforts, assist the Lord’s family in decision making, attend to the care of the injured and the newly orphaned, and try to comfort her own daughter. Magda took on the care of a brother and sister who had been orphaned. They were about the same ages as her dead sons, and got on well with Lidia. As things settled down, Magda was finally able to grieve her old life and adjust to her new one. The three children and her many duties kept Magda was sinking into depression.
