PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION |
In his better days, Loftis was a bit on the small and scrawny side, but
well within the normal standard for a growing young boy. He was always
impeccably groomed, with eyes wide with curiosity and his straight hair
trimmed short to frame his thin face. In his camp days, about the only
thing the same was that he was clean. He’s gotten his growth spurt
without the nutrition to build equal muscle, giving him a decidedly
gaunt look.
Since coming to the Weyr, his ragged hair has been trimmed neat, and
he’s regained a lot of the lost weight and muscle tone. In a few
months, no one would be able to tell by looking that he had spent time
in the camps. |

The Loftis of Rocky Hold was an ambitious young man who was eager to
learn everything he could and save the world single handedly. He was a
serious boy, but perfectly amiable to others, and up for a bit of
occasional mischief with his friends.
The Loftis of Rocky Camp had ambitions that go no further than being
able to handle the next case that arises and saves his amiability for
his patients. Loftis seemed quiet and resigned the rest of the time;
content simply when all the holes in his tent were fixed. If one spent
more than a few moments speaking with him outside of his work, one
found that under the quiet façade was an increasingly nervous and
stressed young man, doing his best to function under pressure. He had
developed a nervous stutter when not actively treating his patients,
barely got a full night of sleep due to stress and nightmares, and was
prone to the occasional panic attack (the medical condition, not the
state of mind). He was just as eager for knowledge, though, and fretted
that more was not readily available.
L’tis is a lot happier at the Weyr, enjoying learning without the
pressure. Someday he’ll be ready to take up a position of
responsibility again, but right now is taking things one day at a time. |

| SHORT HISTORY |
L'tis was the son of an Istan bluerider
and a cook of the Weyr’s lower caverns. He was a curious, lively little
boy who loved to explore and look at dragons, until Tisorel pulled her
five-turn-old son out of the Weyr to go to Rocky Hold and help care for
her elderly mother. After a short period of sulking, Loftis came around
and began making friends at his new home. He never lost his enthusiasm
for dragons, though.
When he turned 12, he begged to be allowed to return to the Weyr and
apprentice as a dragonhealer. Tisorel refused, fearing that he would be
asked to stand for a clutch if he went, and she didn’t want to lose him
to the dragons. His grandmother, Reluka, was thrilled that her grandson
was going to follow the craft of her late husband. Loftis finally
compromised with his mother: he’d apprentice with the local healer for
a Turn or two, to prove his commitment to his lessons, then she would
let him switch his apprenticeship to the dragonhealers. Loftis worked
hard at his studies, but when it came time for him to transfer, Tisorel
suddenly sickened and died. He couldn’t bear to disappoint his
grandmother and leave her so soon after her daughter’s death, and
continued as he was, promising he’d raise the subject with her next
Turn.
Before he could speak up, the disasters of Turn 30 interrupted his
plans again. He stuck close to Reluka in order to take care of her, and
ended up in Rocky camp with the elderly and infirm. He was quickly
drafted as an assistant to the full healers due to his background, and
Loftis responded to the new motivation to learn human healing with all
the vigor of youth. But they never seemed to have enough supplies and
personnel, and his energy soon began flagging into frustration.
Frustration turned to panic and despair as their healers sickened and
died, leaving the half-taught apprentice as one of the most
knowledgeable healers in the camp. He had the support of his
grandmother for a while, but Reluka eventually sickened and died.
Loftis remained at Rocky because he had nowhere else to go, and because
he felt responsible to provide whatever help he can for those in his
infirmary.
He was Searched by Dawnsisters Weyr when Rocky Camp disbanded, and Impressed bronze Nysmeth at Beliath’s hatching. |

A respectable, sturdy sort of personality. He is very steady and calm, though a little vain at times. Sadly, he is also prone to clumsiness at highly inopportune times. He likes to be noticed, but only when it suits him. |
